On Nov. 27, 2012, contract instructor Samah Sabra discussed the transformative experience of teaching her first class using feedback from her cousin completing her first year of undergraduate education and another in her last year of high school. When Samah’s family read through her course outline they told her “We don’t really understand what the course is about!” Samah realized that she had been steeped in academic jargon for so long that she could no longer recognize accessible language for a beginner. This realization transformed her pedagogical framework so that her first day of class become a tool to motivate students and incorporate teaching activities that engaged them.
